 Alison Van Keuren MS,  OTR/L

I have 24 years experience as an occupational therapist. I have worked with children and families in early intervention, outpatient, and school settings. I have also worked with adult and geriatric age groups in skilled nursing facilities and within personal homes.  Prior to the pandemic, I ran a nature-based preschool developmental program out of my home. The opportunity gave the children a space to navigate the outdoor environment, activate sensory integration and connect socially with compassionate adult support.

During the pandemic, I stayed home to educate two of our three children. That year gave us an introspective opportunity to explore new ways of learning and to regain connection. That time was vital for the wellbeing of our children and our whole family unit. We discovered how asynchronous learning and thinking patterns impact executive functioning skills. We found creative and alternative ways learn, focusing on strengths and interests. We built trust and routines that created predicability and motivation. We also navigated the onset of a chronic medical diagnosis for one of our children. We found that shifting our mindset and priorities allowed us to move forward, supporting each other, in a powerful and positive way.

The pandemic year also launched me into deep research and the joining of networks of neuroscientists and child development professionals. Whether hard copy, audio-book, podcast, online forum, continuing education or master class, I have cross referenced multiple sources to recognize the value in compassionately connecting with others to truly understand their needs. I simultaneously ramped up my personal growth journey and discovered holistic approaches to support wellness. I learned the value of having a  network of like minded courageous professionals who have prioritized wellbeing and nurture for the good of themselves and those they work with. Connection and community matter to me greatly.

I have keen observation and perception skills that allow me to listen verbally and non-verbally. It is my intention to make the connections toward a solution alongside you. I am objective and carry no judgment. When we are close to someone, it is harder to have an objective lens. I am that bridge for you. My ultimate wish is for you to find the power within yourself, to participate in the activities you desire and persevere for long lasting results.

During the deep dive into learning new content, I took a position as a Learning Specialist at a Montessori School. As an educator, my direct services include math, reading and writing. In this new role, I quickly discovered how connected the domains and roots of occupational therapy contribute to academic success.  Montessori philosophy is closely aligned with that of occupational therapy. In the Montessori environment, the values of choice and autonomy are evident. I have taken the opportunity in this position to implement the deep connection between the nervous system, sensory states, skills, connection and desires. I meet the students and their families where they are at and then guide them in their momentum forward. I offer my services in the private practice setting to offer the same gift of growth to you.
